A Realizational Approach to Case

چکیده
The German noun phrase generally reflects a straightforward four-way case distinction (nominative, accusative, genitive, dative), but this is most clearly realized on the determiner. Nouns show a depleted case system: genitive is only marked specifically on masculine/neuter nouns in the singular. There are several contexts which require genitive case: possessor NPs and objects of certain verbs and prepositions as well as complements to deverbal nominalizations. However, certain forms of proper names obligatorily fail to realize their genitive case in genitive contexts. Moreover, there are contexts in which even an unambiguously marked genitive singular noun is inadequate on its own and has to be accompanied by an inflected (not indeclinable!) modifier. This complex pattern of behaviour is difficult for current LFG approaches to case to handle because there is a many-many relationship between syntactic case specification and morphological case marking. I propose a realizational analysis, in which it is only NP/DPs in c-structure which are given syntactic CASE attributes. A set of fto c-structure mapping rules define the distribution of these attributes, effectively capturing statements such as ‘transitive SUBJECT is realized by ergative’, ‘POSSESSOR is realized by genitive’ and so on. The syntactic CASE attributes are not part of lexical structure but are mapped onto morphological case-marked forms. Thus, syntactic CASE GEN is by default realized by a noun marked [Case: Gen], but not always, and not all [Case: Gen] marked elements realize CASE GEN (much less POSS).

Relational-Realizational Parsing
State-of-the-art statistical parsing models applied to free word-order languages tend to underperform compared to, e.g., parsing English. Constituency-based models often fail to capture generalizations that cannot be stated in structural terms, and dependency-based models employ a ‘single-head’ assumption that often breaks in the face of multiple exponence. In this paper we suggest that the pos...

“... an inflected word’s association with its morphosyntactic feature specifications is logically prior to the spelling out of its inflectional markings, since it is this very association that determines the sequence of operations by which those markings are introduced; the realizational approach thus entails a rejection of the assumption that a word’s morphosyntactic feature content is built c...
متن کاملComputing with Realizational Morphology
The theory of realizational morphology presented by Stump in his influential book Inflectional Morphology (2001) describes the derivation of inflected surface forms from underlying lexical forms by means of ordered blocks of realization rules. The theory presents a rich formalism for expressing generalizations about phenomena commonly found in the morphological systems of natural languages. Thi...
متن کاملRealizational morphology beyond the lexicon: synthetic and periphrastic verbs in Shona
In this paper, I argue that the choice of a periphrastic over a synthetic verbal form in Shona is a strategy to avoid the realization of specific combinations of morphosyntactic properties by the same word form. I argue that periphrastic forms with -nga are formally equivalent to synthetic forms in the verbal paradigm of Shona, based on the assumption that inflected words are not formed in the ...
متن کاملContinuation tunes in two central varieties of Italian: phonetic patterns and phonological issues
This paper presents the phonetic analysis of the intonational patterns conveying the pragmatic contents of continuation and/or marking syntactic relations in Rome and Perugia Italian: data show the type and the distribution of accents and boundaries occurring in spontaneous task-oriented dialogues. Results imply considerations about issues concerning systemic, phonotactic and realizational aspe...
